Found out about a bunch of new ramen places from Bridge magazine. Ramen Hayatemaru looked the most interesting so we went today. From the reviews on Yelp, supposedly the place fills up quickly so we got there about 10 minutes after it opened. It actually didn't become full the whole time we were there; I guess the rush is over.
The menu is clear with big pictures and English descriptions.
We ordered the Hokkaido Shoyu Ramen and the White Miso Ramen because the menu said they are the recommended items. The Shoyu Ramen has a thicker broth than most other places. It is creamy and full of soy sauce flavor. They use very thick noodles, which compliment the soup very nicely.
I am normally not a fan of miso ramen but the White Miso Ramen was a nice surprise. The white miso has a nice fermented taste that sets it apart from miso ramen from other places.
The White Miso Ramen comes with spicy miso paste that changes the flavor completely. It can be used to change it up a little bit if the palate grew tired of the heavy white miso taste.
We got extra soft broiled flavor egg. It's not bad but not as good as some other places.
The Gyoza is one of the best in Los Angeles. The gyoza are like with veggie taste and comes with soy sauce or red spicy miso sauce.
Overall it is a very interesting ramen place that I'd love to go again. Next time I'll try the Red Miso Ramen and Jjigae Ramen. I'd say I like it more than Santouka but it can't beat Yamadaya.
Update 6/30/2012: I went there again. Read about my second experience
